the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He
brought her to the man" (Genesis 2:22 NKJV)
After surgery there was a vacant spot below
Adam's heart. He had been under anesthesia. The Bible says, "The Lord God caused
a deep sleep to fall on Adam...and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the
flesh in its place". I can't explain the science of Creationism. Was the
feminine side cloned from his bone marrow? Ribs are bones that guard heart and
lungs, the very soul of a man. The wedding script says, she was not taken from
his skull to lord over him or from a bone of his foot to be trampled on, but
from his side, close to his heart and under his arm where she can be cherished
and protected. Eve was prime rib. It took a wound to create her. Jesus too was
wounded, a lance thrust into His ribcage and from that wound blood and water
spilled to make access for the Bride's creation (John 19:34). In every
tear-jerker love story, sometime or another, the guy is holding the gaping
wound in his side. Both Adam and Jesus were side-split; Paul saw them as one
and the same (Ephesians 5:32).
Ribs are strong but they are breakable. Eve
provides skeletal structure. She is a "help-meet" (KJV), an under-girder.
Nothing discomforts like a cracked or broken rib because it makes every drawn
breath painful. And there is no cure for a cracked rib; it can only heal with
time. Likewise in marriage; fractured trust can't just be set in a cast by the
bone doctor and then everything is okay. Healing takes time. So as Eve supports
Adam, Adam must also protect Eve. His strong arms shield the vulnerability of
the lower ribs. Perfect peace is when heart and rib rest together as one. The
rib feels the pounding heartbeat and the heart feels the rib's support.
Some wise guy quipped that "Adam's rib and
Satan's fib made Women's Lib". Well Adam bore as much guilt as did Eve but the
sexes were never supposed to be conflictive or fight for separate rights.
Remember, Eve came out of Adam. God didn't scoop a separate handful of mud to
mold a second entity. From one God made two so that in marriage, of two He can
make one again. They "two shall become one flesh". The rib dislocated by divine
surgery became the rib relocated by a vow, to favor, love and cherish. Without
the rib a man's heart (the seat of his emotions and affections) is exposed and
the exposure can be deadly. But without the love and protection of Adam, the
rib, like bones on the side of the road, becomes prey to the scavengers.
Simply, we were created independent yet at the same time co-dependent, "bone of
my bone, and flesh of my flesh". Eve was prime rib, the choicest cut (but then
someone added an apple to the menu and that's another story).
