also bestowed sight on many blind folk" (Luke 7:21 Moffatt)
I use a lot of verses from James Moffatt's
translation of the Bible, 1922 edition, because I really like his word usage.
Here it says Jesus "bestowed" sight. King James says He "gave" sight. One must
have sight to give sight. To "bestow" is to give, confer, deposit, lavish upon.
"In him was life" (John 1:4). That means that Jesus invested what came from
within. It is impossible to impart what you have no part in. Jesus assured the
disciples, "freely you have received, freely give" (Matthew 10:8). Natural man
is barren and empty within himself. A barren desert can't preach to the
thirsty. A drowning man has no business blowing a lifeguard's whistle. A beggar
shouldn't conduct a seminar on making money. Any "fullness" we have comes by
the grace of God.
Peter professed to the lame man, "Such as I
have, give I thee" (Acts 3:6). He must have had much for with the jerk of a
hand the lame man leaped to his feet. Jesus taught, "Give alms of such things
as you have..." (Luke 11:41) Those who truly can see are free to bestow sight on
the blind. I'm talking about revelation. A vivacious personality lights up the
room and literally rubs off on those around. That is bestowal. Hope in your eyes
raises hope in another's. If you've lost a hundred pounds go ahead and write a
diet book. We minister out of life experience. I can give comfort because I
have been comforted.
Jesus bestowed sight "on many" blind folk. "By
one man's obedience many will be made righteous" (Romans 5:19). Faith
multiplies. God took of the Spirit on Moses and spread it to the seventy elders
of Israel (Numbers 11:25). We are never diminished by what we pour out to
others; rather what we freely give replenishes itself when we give. To grow,
don't stow...rather bestow! The lad's five loaves and two fishes would have
remained just that had he not given them to Jesus. But once turned over for the
Lord's use the miracle of multiplication took place. His little gift blessed a
huge crowd and it will work the same for you. Give and it shall be given.
