THE "WORD" STUDYING THE WORD
"...and when he had opened the book, he found the
place where it is written" (Luke 4:17)
Jesus was called "the Word" and that
"Word became flesh" (John 1:1,14). The theological term kenosis means
that by incarnation Jesus emptied Himself of everything divine to become a human
just like us. Yes, Jesus had to be burped, had to learn to walk, then talk, and
even needed taught the Bible. Though being "the Word" He studied the word. It
didn't come all at once. He "increased in wisdom and stature..." (Luke 2:52)
Earlier in that chapter, at age twelve, He was found in the temple, "sitting in
the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions"
(Luke 2:46). Imagine that, a twelve year-old attending divinity school instead
of playing ball or climbing trees!
No wonder, when he was tempted by the
devil at age thirty He was able so easily to fire back, "It is written!" The
"Word" could quote the word. At the synagogue in Nazareth "he found the place
where it is written". Remember, they had big scrolls back then, not bound books
like we have today, and the pages weren't numbered. A lot of people can quote
Bible verses but few can tell the proper address. Jesus knew where to find any
scripture regarding any situation. In fact, He said, "You do err not knowing
the scriptures..." (Matthew 22:29) He was able to walk through all that was
"written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning
[Himself]" (Luke 24:44).
He didn't know the word because He was
God. He knew it because He had memorized it, mused in it, meditated on it,
mastered it and was mastered by it. We actually have better access to Bible
study than Jesus ever dreamed of. The written word was scarce in those days.
Common people had to go clear to the temple for education from the scribes or
at least to local synagogues. Today the word is available in book form, CD-rom,
downloadable MP3s, on TV, radio, Sunday sermon, internet and the end table
drawer in your motel room. I'll shoot the word to your computer inbox every
morning if you need me to. Quit the excuses. To not know in this day is to not
care. Jesus, the man, studied the word. We are to follow in His steps.
