FAITH, IT'S OUTTA SIGHT!

"Faith...the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1)

Faith always begins in the unseen realm then manifests in the seen. "For we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7). Wind is "not seen" but it has evidence, a cool brush against the skin or the shaking of tree leaves. In legal terminology "evidence" means "data presented to a court or jury in proof of the facts in issue, which may include testimony of witnesses, records, documents or objects". The testimony of others is one kind of validation. The written Word is documentation enough for believers. Faith counts the thing done on the mere "supporting evidence" of scripture. "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed" (John 20:29).

But faith does in time "become sight" as the old hymn states. Three stories come to mind. Jesus rebuked the fruitless fig tree - "Let no one eat fruit from you ever again!" (Mark 11:14) That verse adds, "...and the disciples heard it". Faith speaks boldly. It doesn't muffle its confession in fear of being found a fraud. There was no visible reaction to Jesus' words right then but the next morning the disciples saw the "fig tree dried up from the roots" (vs 20). The moment Jesus spoke the cursed tree began to die beneath the surface. God was at work in the realm of the unseen, outta sight.

In another place Jesus commanded Peter and his fishing buddies to launch out into the deep for a huge catch of fish. Having spent the night on the waves without a nibble, Peter the expert, sarcastically voiced that he knew more about fishing than did the preacher from Nazareth. "We have toiled all night and caught nothing" (Luke 5:5). Be sure that any sentence that starts with WE will end with NOTHING. Jesus confided, "Without me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). See if you can detect any sarcasm in Peter's voice, "Nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net". Or, "because You say so, Jesus, I will cast the net where the fish AREN'T!" But faith works in the unseen. Beneath that watery veil swarms of fish swam as fast as they could straight into Peter's dragnet. Don't underestimate what is happening beyond the veil of human sight.

Third, when the Red Sea divided the fissure in the sea occurred out of man's sight. It didn't happen as pictured in the Charlton Heston movie. There we have the image of Moses raising his staff then the Sea rolling backward starting at Moses' feet. Not so, the Bible says "the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night..." (Exodus 14:21) The Israelites were on the west side of the Sea. If it rolled back via an east wind, that would assume that the channel through the sea first opened way out of their range of vision, coming toward them from the eastern shore. As they believed for deliverance from Pharaoh's army, God was up to something really outta sight! In every case believers had to wait for the substance of their faith to be evidenced. The tree shriveled from the roots up, the fish swam directly into the nets, and the opening in the Red Sea came from yonder shore straight up to the Hebrews' feet. Don't give up on your dream. There is an unseen world more real than this seen world. The problem is in accepting that God does in fact hold up His end of the deal.
