GOD'S HEDGE

"Have you not put a hedge about him...and about all that he has?" (Job 1:10)

Blessed protection! Satan, who had been "going to and fro in the earth, and walking up and down in it", testified that Job was completely hedged in by God. Walking in latitude, longitude and diagonally he had circumscribed Job's life and found no weak spot or door of access. Praise God for the hedge. Believers are not isolated from the world but are insulated in the world; in it but not of it. Paul added, "...your life is hid with Christ in God" (Colossians 3:3). That's double insulation; in Christ, hedge number one, and in God, hedge two. Draw two concentric circles then put a dot in the middle of them. No alien power can get to the dot without going through the other two lines first, the two circles being the Father and the Son, the dot being you. Jesus assured our security using the metaphor of two powerful hands - "neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand...no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand" (John 10:28,29). You're in good hands with All-State, better hands with God!

David hedges the believer/sheep with even greater poetic imagery, portraying us as totally enveloped in God. Check out Psalm Twenty-three. Beneath me are "green pastures". Beside me are "still waters". With me is, "thou art with me". Around me is "a table in the presence of mine enemies". Upon me is, "thou anointest my head with oil". Behind me is "goodness and mercy", and ahead of me is "the house of the Lord forever". No angle is left unprotected. This is complete circumvention. The angel of the Lord "encampeth round about them that fear him..." (Psalm 34:7), "thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance" (Psalm 32:7). We have walls, the security of our "city of refuge", Jesus Christ. The phrase "In Christ" is used seventy-seven times in the New Testament and "in him" fourteen times in Paul's epistles. "In Christ" we are the "in-crowd". In the Savior we are never insecure. Thank God for the hedge.

Every trial you will ever face, to coin a phrase from Pastor John Kilpatrick, is "Father-filtered". The archenemy couldn't touch Job, his house, his children, his possessions, or anything without the okay of heaven. Behind the hedge we are 100% secure. And, if for some divine purpose, the hedge is ever momentarily lifted, sufficient grace will be given to keep us 'til the trial is over. The key is to stay ever behind the hedge. Cling to the cross. Hide behind the blood-stained door. Hold fast in the city of refuge. Then you can claim His mighty promise, "There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy house" (Psalm 91:10). "In Christ" you are off limits to whatever is without Him.
