YOU CAN'T WIN IT UNLESS YOU'RE IN IT!

"In a race, everyone runs but only one person gets first prize. So run your race to win" (1 Corinthians 9:24 TLB)

During a post-game news conference, questioned about national playoff hopes and a trip to the Super Bowl, Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme quipped, "You can't win it unless you're in it". What he meant is there is no way to get to the grand Super Bowl title-game if the team doesn't position itself for that game by making the playoffs. That kind of goes for all games, doesn't it? In the stock market, you can't win it unless you're in it. You can't flip the graduate's tassel as a high school dropout. Participation is the primal thing. You can't dance unless you get out on the dance floor. So get out of bed. Suit up. Pay the entry fee. Climb out on a limb. Participate. And there is more to being in it then just being in it, if that makes any sense? Your heart has to be in it. The University of Texas Longhorns shut down the favored USC Trojans' 34-game winning streak last week in the Rose Bowl because Vince Young and crew's hearts, souls and shoulder pads were in it. Have you enlisted? Are you shooting for the playoffs or are you content with Friday's paycheck and maybe a two-buck rental from Blockbuster?

No one gets to the big game without paying some dues. The Road to Nowhere doesn't charge any tolls. It takes no effort because it's downhill the whole way. Plenty of others are on that road so they will never be lonely who travel it, but the Road to Nowhere has one problem, when you get there you don't know where "there" is and you don't have anything to do after you arrive! Not much motivation in mediocrity. Thirty NFL teams get to play the regular season but only a sweet sixteen have a shot at the playoffs. It gets lonelier the closer you get to the top. And you can't win it unless you're in it!

Many are called, but few are chosen (Matthew 22:14), yet everyone has an even shot at the big game. Some of the playoff teams had losses earlier in the season but they made comebacks. Falling down isn't failure; staying down is. All of the teams have endured injuries but the sweet sixteen haven't laid down their armor or called it quits. Surviving into post-season demands focus and fortitude. They knew the goal when the opening kickoff started the season in August and kept the goal in focus for sixteen back-to-back grueling Sundays through the Fall. Last year's Super Bowl favorite was the Philadelphia Eagles and they started this season as the sports analysts' best bet. But something was missing. Yes, they had bad luck in their running backs' health and then there was wide-receiver Terrell Owens with all his on-the-field and off-the-field shenanigans, who eventually had to be dismissed from the team. But the real reason the 2005 Eagles turned into sparrows, or maybe better-said turkeys, was that their hearts weren't in it. Somewhere along the road to the Super Bowl the team got detoured, ending in a six-win/ten-loss season. Your life can be detoured too, friend, if you don't keep practicing for tomorrow, if you don't tape up the aching ankles and go back for another set of downs. So to close, it would do us all well to quote Deslomme's line over and over in our minds because everybody knows...you can't win it if you're not in it!
