infection of their teaching will spread like gangrene..." (2 Timothy 2:17 REB)
KJV says "their word will eat like a canker",
NKJV, "like cancer". But the Greek word used for the ulcerating doctrines of
Hymenaeus and Philetus is gangraina which according to Vine's Dictionary
means "an eating sore, spreading corruption and producing mortification". Paul
couldn't have used a more noxious and descriptive term than gangrene. This
devilish duo taught that the final resurrection was already past which opened a
major doctrinal can of worms for the fledgling church. Rather than practice get-alongism
or respect the good brothers' differing points of view Paul called it
heresy and warned everybody to avoid these guys like bacteria.
Gangrene is rot. False doctrine is rot. There
are two kinds, liquefactive necrosis and...ah, forget the medical jargon...there is
wet rot and dry rot. Wet rot is what happens around an infected wound where pus
suffocates oxygen flow and corrodes living tissue. The dry version is what
happens, for instance, in the extremities of diabetes sufferers when blood flow
is curtailed. The only cure is rapid revascularization. In other words,
according to Dr. Paul, if they didn't get the Blood of Jesus and the Oxygen of
the Holy Spirit to the infected members of the Body, the cancerous errors of
these false teachers would lead to spiritual death. And when every other remedy
has been exhausted there is only one remaining cure, and you know what that
Are you enjoying this devotion? As kids we
called it gang green. Jesus called it leaven. "Know ye not that a little
leave leaveneth the whole lump?" (1 Corinthians 5:6). Error spreads. Doctrines
of demons are proliferating in these dark days. The preventative treatment
starts with periodic tests. "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith..."
(2 Corinthians 13:5) The diabetic may show swelling in the feet. Hymanaeus and
Philetus had swelling in their heads! Get a tetanus shot. The soul needs an
immunity system just like the body. The Word of God is the antibody builder.
That is why, in that same chapter Paul talked about studying "to show ourselves
approved unto God" and "rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15).
Get full enough of the word and stepping on a rusty nail won't harm a thing. A
snake latched hold of Paul's arm one time and he just shook it off. The safest
measure is to just stay clear of contagious teachers. In the next verse Paul
said to "shun profane and vain babblings" and later to "avoid...genealogies, and
contentions, and strivings about the law" and all that enlightened gobbledygook
(Titus 3:9). And keep your wounds clean. Every believer gets wounded, sometimes
even in the house of his friends. Cleanse and dress the wounds. Don't let the
bacteria of bitterness or the gangrene of grudge to infect the lacerations.
Life makes us bleed but as long as the cut bleeds clean it will likely heal.
Plus, the Great Physician will come by and pour in the oil and the wine.
Infection will try to come your way but you don't have to receive it. Choose
