WORLDLY WISDOM

"Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ" (Colossians 2:8 NKJV)

The "basic principles of the world"; what does he mean by that? What goes up must come down? Two and two makes four? No, those are physic and mathematic principles originating from God. Worldly wisdom is man's way of looking at things, denying, even deliberately contradicting the revealed wisdom of God. God said, "In the day you eat thereof, you shall surely die". The wisdom of the world says, "No, you will not die, but you will become as gods". Learning the principles of the world is what caused our fore-parents in the very beginning to eat us out of house and home. So what are some of the "basic" principles of the world? Certainly we can't cover the whole catalog.

For one thing, there is no tomorrow so grab for the gusto while you can. Eat, drink and be merry was the original temptation in the Garden and it has had mankind feeding out of that same hand ever since. Another basic could be formed into lyrics, "Imagine there no heaven, it's easy if you try..." I can understand John Lennon singing that but my heart sank when Dolly Parton sang it a few weeks ago on an award show. I thought her rural background at least made room for heaven and hell, but perhaps not. The world has a fundamental tenant that a woman has the right to choose. If some gal says, "I'm pro-choice. I choose birth and choose life", they immediately call her a rightwing fanatic. The world's view is that abortion is preferable to adoption and condoms to continence.

The world has an excuse that says, "I was born that way so stay out of my business..." Jesus came back with, "Be born again and you won't be that way anymore!" The world teaches, "If you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with". So couples stay with monogamy till faced with monotony. Marriage becomes "till debt do us part" and then the pre-nup agreement kicks in. The Golden Rule is swapped for the rule of gold, which says something to the effect of, "Do one to others before they do one to you!" I suppose the chief principle of the old serpent's system is, "Look out for Numero Uno" because Self, after all, is the center of the Universe. Theology is out, Me-ology is in.

The King James Version says to beware "lest any man spoil you" through these rudimentary philosophies of the world. They can turn people into spoiled brats and taken to their logical end they will make a society rot like a spoiled steak. Even the church buys into the seduction. Are you familiar with the verse that says, "God helps those who help themselves?" Sorry, that isn't a Bible verse; it is a basic principle of the world because it is a common half-truth. Those who have learned how to help themselves, seldom, if ever go to God for help. The world says that since all are sinners we may as well sin it up big-time. That antinomian leaven spread through the church at Rome to which Paul retorted, "God forbid!" (Romans 6:2) The only way to discern what is patently worldly wisdom is to get so acquainted with heaven's ways that everything inferior becomes blatantly apparent. The way banks train their employees to spot the counterfeit is by getting them super-familiar with the genuine. The same works in spiritual things. "There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12). Just because your favorite celebrity makes a statement, it doesn't make his thesis true. We have to go to the Word, and as much as it may conflict with the way we have always heard it, we have to see God as true, and "every [other] man a liar" (Romans 3:5).
