CRUISIN' FOR A BRUISIN'

"And the God of peace shall bruise Satan beneath your feet shortly" (Romans 16:20)

I say "bruise" because that is the term used in the old King James Version. All the other translations on my library shelf use the word "crush". Satan is soon to be crushed under our feet. The Greek word suntribo means literally "to crush, break in pieces or crush to shivers". I like the way The Message paraphrases the verse, "before you know it the God of peace will come down on Satan with both feet, stomping him into the dirt..." Yes, someone's cruisin' for a bruisin'. So said the initial curse on the Serpent way back in the Garden, "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your seed and her seed, he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel" (Genesis 3:15). The "seed of the woman" is of course the virgin-born Son of God, Jesus, and the serpent is a symbolic title for Satan. Jesus gets a heel wound, one spike through His coupled feet, while the enemy is inflicted with a mortal head wound, cruisin' for a bruisin'. Except for a bad case of tetanus, people don't normally die from a heel wound, but many have bit the dust (pardon the pun) from cerebral trauma and hemorrhaging. Every time we praise God, preach His word or practice His authority we squeeze the enemy's bruise, sending him down the road holding his aching noggin.

Notice, it is the "God of peace" that so bruises Satan beneath our feet. Not the God of war or God of vengeance, but the God of peace. Our victory was settled on the Cross. When Jesus cried, "It is finished", all was finished. Today He says, "Sit thou at my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool" (Psalm 110:1). Even now we "sit together in heavenly places in Christ" (Ephesians 2:6). As Watchman Nee taught, we fight from a seated position. Our victory is in our peace so don't let him intimidate you or get you flustered. Notice also, that Satan is soon to be bruised "beneath your feet". Jesus won the battle but we enforce the terms of surrender. His FEAT defeated the enemy but our FEET depose him. Throughout the Bible feet symbolize the taking of dominion. When someone puts his foot down it means that he has taken his stand. Drawing a line in the sand with one's toe means "this property is mine and I'm ready to defend it".

When we say someone is cruisin' for a bruisin', implied is that we've taken all we're going to take. Are you fed up? The God of peace shall bruise Satan beneath our feet "shortly". God does have a time table. Al Qaida is on a divine leash and is about to feel it yank. Dope thugs, criminals, gangsters and pranksters don't have free reign though it may look like it for the moment. Soviet communism toppled to the ground though "shortly" took seventy years. The key is to keep squeezing that bruise. The wheels of judgment turn slowly but they do turn surely. There will be a payday someday. The last line of our text says, "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen". There is grace during the grappling. Though unseen Christ is never unengaged. The Captain stands among His troops. With divine timing will come divine taming. The serpent will bite the dust just like the original promise predicted, "On your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life" (Genesis 3:14). The "prince of the power of the air" (Ephesians 2:2) is headed for a crash landing and the wreckage won't be a pretty sight. Until that day God says, "Sit at my right hand". In other words, rest in calm assurance that everything is going to work out. And when called upon to put your foot down, don't give up your territory, not a single inch.
