SEEING IS NOT BELIEVING

"...blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed" (John 20:29)

Not necessarily. Thomas investigated. If he did as Jesus commanded and thrust his hand into the gaping hole in Jesus' side then it would have been an appalling sight for the rest of the disciples and a very nervous moment for Thomas. Didymus, or the Twin, for so was his name and nature, a "double-minded man" (James 1:8), lost all his doubts in that single second. But we today are not rewarded for being proof-seeking, "non-biased" or "critical thinkers" (which is just a synonym for being a big skeptic). We walk not by sight, but by faith. Diving blessing is promised to those "that have not seen, and yet have believed". Seeing is not believing. From childhood we have been warned against blind trust. Get a credit report, at least five references, take down the license number, wait till the lab findings are in, ask for a second opinion. But faith in God is not blind trust. He is faithful to His word. God cannot lie. He flips the "I'll have to see it to believe it" mentality on its head. We pray with eyes wide open. Faith confides in God's least detail. He said, "...by whose stripes you were healed", past tense. Doctors' diagnoses don't add to or subtract from "thus saith the Lord". The chaplain of Bourbon Street used to say, "God said it, I believe it, and that settles it". Nice line but it needs slight amendment. God said it and that settles it.

The Bible in print is as commanding as a nail print. Faith is "the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). Do you have a promise from scripture? That is evidence enough. Rejoice in spite of symptom or diagnosis. If science backs up your belief (which it always does in time) then wonderful, but if science, family, friends and the whole county rejects your faith, welcome to the club, you still have to stand on the Word, often times alone. The world celebrates Thomas's investigative research but Jesus reproved it. "Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed". Heaven's most lavish laurels go to those who simply take God at His word.

Fulfillment seems so far away, doesn't it? Every day it's one step forward and sometimes two steps back. You try to believe but the odds say, the doctors say, the magazines say, everything visual contradicts what you feel God has spoken to your heart. It's a dark tunnel you're driving through right now, that distance between asking and receiving. He doesn't ask you to figure it out. He asks you to faith it out. The head is for explaining things, the heart is for experiencing things. Your head says this relationship will never be, I will never be able to make the down-payment on that house, my résumé doesn't show enough education or experience, or whatever. That's Thomas Didymus assessing facts and figures, not Peter stepping out on the water in faith. Seeing is not believing, at least not seeing with natural optics. Faith calls those things that are not as though they were. It sees the intangible and hears the inaudible. It pictures cloud formations when others stand by and say, "I don't get it". It hears music that others don't hear. Faith evidence defies conflicting evidence when that evidence is anti-Word or anti-revelation. And though it has to wait months, sometimes years, it does so happily humming all the while. The world writes you off as crazy, "She sees things and probably hears voices too". Yea, the vision of the Lord and the voice of the Lord. Seeing, the skeptical kind of seeing, absolutely is not believing.
