ONCE IN A LIFETIME

"...it came his one turn in life to enter the sanctuary of God and burn incense" (Luke 1:9 The Message)

It was Zachariah's turn. Some priests' names were never drawn in their whole lifetime. Opportunity came by lottery. Those who did get to serve in the Temple were only permitted to approach the Golden Altar one time. What a privilege. Zachariah only got to serve once. You and I have access to the throne room every day of our lives. Don't take it for granted. "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace..." (Hebrews 4:16) The veil locked shut to all intruders other than the High Priest on his annual visit is now ripped in two making perpetual access to the least believer in Christ. But that's not the focus of this message. Instead I wish to discuss once in a lifetime moments. The old axiom suggests that every man gets his twenty minutes of fame, that once in a lifetime thing for which he was destined.

Mordecai questioned Queen Esther, "Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" (Esther 4:14) Each has his particular job to do. Lincoln was strategically positioned for America's civil conflict, Churchill for the Nazi showdown, Rudy Giuliani for the September Eleventh crisis, Iacocca for Chrysler's darkest hour. No one is guaranteed a second chance in "such a time as this". The man or woman has to be ready when the curtain opens. Success is having your luggage all packed when opportunity finally knocks. There are once in a lifetime business deals, once in a lifetime calls to action, once in a lifetime loves. Some never see the tear in the veil. Others see it but fear peeking their head around the corner to see what's on the other side. We're not afforded the luxury of working up courage for once in a lifetime moments. No testing the water temperature with your toe. It's dive in or miss your chance. Had Peter ran the numbers by the probability analysts he never would have walked on water. He leaped before he looked. Dolly Parton mused that if you want your place in the sun you'll have to expect some blisters.

This human/ divine convergence has been called "the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance". Zachariah had one shot at it. An old man and a barren wife, he petitioned God for a son, and there at the Golden Altar the priest's wish was answered, yes more than answered, for God promised him a son that would be the forerunner for Christ. Zach and Liz would be the proud parents of John the Baptist. That is why we must live in anticipation. Next Sunday, preacher, may be that once in a lifetime Sunday that you've always dreamed of. God may just show up and show out. The next person you meet may be your ticket to paradise. The worst thing you can do is concede that this is as good as it gets and yield to the call of the rocking chair. You and I were designed to solve a problem. Edison solves the light in the darkness problem, the Wright brothers solve a transportation problem, Bill Gates solves an office efficiency problem. Their names wouldn't be in the history books had they not met opportunity with ingenuity. Goliath was David's once in a lifetime opportunity. (He was also Saul's opportunity but Saul cowered in the trench while David fetched five smooth stones.) Zachariah clinched the altar by the horns. You and I have to take the bull by the horns. There is a juncture where humanity and divinity meet. The Greeks called it fate. Capitalism calls it striking while the iron is hot. Christianity simply sees it as an urgent response to grace. When that moment came Zachariah wasn't about to mumble or act shy. He gripped the horns of the altar and boldly asked for a son...and a son was given.
