GOOD SUCCESS

"...and then you will have good success" (Joshua 1:8)

There are over 773,000 individual words in the King James text but only once in all those thousands of words do we see the term "success". That implies that "success" at least by our modern definition is not high on God's list of priorities. He is a lot more concerned about our surrender than our success. But since success is mentioned we joyfully highlight it and pursue it. I am a "success preacher", guilty as charged. The limited appearance of the word doesn't negate the voluminous weight of the theme throughout the Bible for the Bible is a success manual - "This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth..." First, success is a vocal thing. We say it. Second, success is a focal thing, we see it. Third, success is a local thing, we seize it. Success is not far away in some elite university or in a job opportunity somewhere over the rainbow. It is local, "nigh thee, in thine heart, and in thine mouth, that is the word of faith which we preach" (Romans 10:8). The success-maker lives inside you so you don't have to chase success but rather just live it.

What about a definition? Albert Schweitzer is quoted, "Success is not the key to happiness; happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing you will be successful". See, it is local, a matter of right thinking. Our text endorses that, "but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do all that is written therein..." Success, of course, requires resolve and effort. Some wit humored, "Barbers climb the lather of success". It is a climb and a claim. Zig Zigler muses, "Don't stare up the steps; step up the stairs!" And John Maxwell pictures the climb, "Followers see the hard work of climbing the mountain of success; leaders see the success of climbing the mountain of hard work". That is worth memorizing. Success is a matter of luck...ask any failure. But we know better. Daisy Osborn said it comes "by pluck, not by luck". I think Mike Murdock's definition is most succinct - "Success is a satisfying movement toward worthwhile goals that God has scheduled for your life. The smallest step in the right direction creates joy". Yes. Success is not the realization of the goal but the gradation toward it.

It is vocal. To see good things, we must say good things. That's called positive confession. Abraham "called those things that are not as though they were". We are speaking spirits and are most like the creative God when speaking His word. Success also is focal. God gave us a mouth to master our mind. Our words shape and condition our thoughts but then those thoughts must become targeted. Peter had a focus. He walked on water because his focus was set on a single absolute, Christ. It was when he looked around, when focus became distracted, that he began to sink. The verse right before our text says we are not to turn from our focus on the Word "to the right hand or to the left, that [we] may prosper wherever [we] go". Third, success is local. I can't emphasize that enough. You can start with who you are, where you are, and with what you have. "Look from the place where you are..." (Genesis 13:14) Faith is vocalized then localized. Most expect to begin after college is finished, after they get married, after they make their first million, after they move to the city or whatever. To them success is always over there, never right here, right now. But look at the promise, "Now faith is..." (Hebrews 11:1) Everything you need for success is resident within you. The seeds of greatness are within, not without. You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great! General Patton said, "A good plan implemented today is better than a great plan implemented tomorrow". So get started today...today...on your climb up the "lather of success"!
