RESISTING SICKNESS

"...and he who does not use his endeavors to heal himself is brother to him who commits suicide" (Proverbs 18:9 AMP)

We ought to defy sickness with the same resolve with which we defy sin. The same spirit is behind both attacks and it must be resisted with the same fervor. Sin brought sickness into the human experience so when sin is chased out through the power of Christ its twin brother sickness ought to pack his bags and scurry away just as quickly. We do not tolerate sin, nor should we tolerate sickness. Both are foreign to the will of God for a believer's life. Our text, taken from the Amplified Bible, says that we must make personal effort in combating disease. To not fight sickness and disease is a passive form of suicide. The footnote for that verse says, "This verse so reads in the Septuagint Version (the Greek translation of the Hebrew). Its statement squarely meets the problem as to whether one has a moral right to neglect his body by letting nature take its course unhindered in illness". In other words, we are responsible for health maintenance, and for going to all-out war against illness if need be.

It is hard to interpret all that from the KJV. It simply states, "He also that is slothful in work is brother to him that is a great waster". Living Bible calls him a "saboteur". It is self-sabotage to not appropriate available medicine, doctoral skills, surgery if needed and so on, all the while bringing others together in agreeing prayer and following the faith principles of the Word. The hands of medicine and prayer join together to make an awesome healing team. Remember Luke was a doctor while Paul was a man of faith and prayer and the two ministered together in their travels, employing their own personal skills. Now I believe God can heal anyone instantly and have seen it happen on many occasions, but I would be out of line to counsel you to just let nature run its course. Why; because this is a fallen world and its natural course is toward disease, death and decay. Christ came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). To stand on the winning side we too must fight what appears "natural". Sin and sickness are not "natural". These were banes brought upon the human family through rebellion. God's will is health, longevity, happiness and physical, emotional and spiritual soundness.

When the Good Samaritan ministered to the man in the ditch he "poured in oil and wine". It would have been suicide for the victimized man to refuse those two healing antiseptics. The oil symbolizes the anointing of the Holy Spirit and the wine symbolizes the cleansing red blood of Christ. "Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?" (Jeremiah 8:22) Indeed there is. Jesus is the doctor in the house. He will heal us but His healing often comes coupled with our own good sense. We have to watch the foods we eat. It helps to read up on what has worked for others (without making a cult or religion out of exercise, herbs and Web/MD). Dr. Diet is a trusted physician, as is Dr. Quiet. We need some rest, some Sabbath. The greatest and most proven remedy is still prayer. I'm not a "faith healer". Jesus is the Healer, but I do have faith, and will gladly pray for the needs of all who write. James said, "the prayer of faith shall save the sick..." (James 5:15) I'm also not an expert etymologist but I do know what "shall" means. God is committed to doing His part once we have done our part. If sin is in the way then confess it and remove the stumbling block. Then sickness will have to exit through the same door. Read the text again in the Amplified version. Chew on it for a moment. Then get busy on the healing process.
