THE "IMP" OUT OF IMPOSSIBLE
men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible"
The dictionary defines "imp" as "a little
demon, a mischievous child", with synonyms listed as "scamp, rascal, brat" and
"devil". The connotation is that of a lesser annoyance, a shrimp imp. I
wish today to kick that imp out of impossible! When Robert Schuller faced the banker
for a multi-million dollar loan to build the Crystal Cathedral, he was
summarily laughed out of the bank office with one word, "Impossible!" But
Schuller didn't retreat. He handed the loan officer his pocket dictionary
asking the man to read, out loud, the definition of impossible, which he of
course couldn't because the TV preacher had cut "impossible" out of the
dictionary. That boldness won him the loan and the rest is history.
If "imp" is just a little scamp, rascal or brat
then how mighty is its counterpart, "possible"? Jesus quoted, "If you have
faith as a mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder
place; and it shall remove: and nothing shall be impossible unto you" (Matthew
17:20). It is not the size of the seed that matters but the fact that there is
unconquerable life inside that seed. Every time you see a seedling growing
through a crack in concrete you should realize who of the two won the contest.
We kick the imp out of impossible by holding our ground and pushing through the
We also kick that imp out by linking arms with
omnipotence. The angel Gabriel announced, "For with God nothing shall be
impossible" (Luke 1:37). Notice the preposition with a proposition, "with". It
is "with God", that is, side by side in cooperation and partnership that
"nothing shall be impossible". We are "workers together with" God (2
Corinthians 6:1). The word is sunergeo, there is a synergy-energy
released when man and God align in faith.
To kick the imp out of impossible we have to
operate under different auspices. Notice in our text, "with men it is
impossible, but not with God..." Man in all his ingenuity can only go so far. His
is a natural kingdom bound by natural laws. But God stands outside that system
and can suspend natural dynamics at any given time, should He choose to answer
prayer. Man by himself is a foreigner to miracle mode. That is why, in the
Matthew passage earlier mentioned, the disciples hung their heads and asked,
"Why could not we cast him out?" An "imp" got into their possibilities. Jesus
answered, "Because of your unbelief..." We have to tell doubt to get out! The imp
has to hit the tracks when we understand that fear and faith cannot abide under
the same roof. Fear is conquered when we come into agreement with the Word.
Light dispels darkness. The enemy cannot continue his nefarious practice in the
broad daylight of truth. "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make
you free". Jesus shouted, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You!"
(Mark 14:36) Victory sure comes easier when a person is on talking terms with
Father. Restore relationship with Him. Plant the mustard seed. Look up then
link up "with" God. Grab some scissors and cut "impossible" out of your
dictionary then delete it from your vocabulary. Kick the imp out of impossible
and your whole life will witness change.
