SHUT YO' MOUTH!

"My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me..." (Daniel 6:22)

If God can shut the lions' mouths He can also shut your boss's mouth, your accuser's mouth or your worst critic's. Notice, Daniel was not kept from the lions' den but was kept in the den. The angel struck the lions with lockjaw, so Daniel just fluffed one of them up for a pillow and another for a footrest then slept like a baby the rest of the night. (OBTW...why do we say "slept like a baby" when babies wake up every couple of hours?) Daniel didn't wake, he slept; others might have slipped. Faith silences the snarls of skeptics, cynics, critics and all other kinds of "icks". Praising God in the midst of negative circumstances mutes and muffles the accuser, "that thou mightest still the [voice of the] enemy and the avenger" (Psalm 8:2). When he turns up the pressure you turn up the praise and the enemy will have will have to flee out of sheer exhaustion. He can't stay in the same ring with the Holy Ghost for five seconds.

God shut the lions' mouths for Daniel, other times He lets our adversaries continue to yap but circles us in His pavilion to where all opposing voices are put on mute. Their lips move but we cannot hear what they are saying. "You shall hide them in the secret of your presence from the pride of man: you shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues" (Psalm 31:20). We have to learn the art of tuning out distraction. But there are also times when we need to make a stand. "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you". Sometimes adversarial mouths won't shut without some help. Now that doesn't mean we should go around putting people "in their place". The person walking in the fruit of the Spirit only says, "Shut yo' mouth!" after long abstinence, a long prayer and several deep breaths. But neither are we to be pushovers. Jesus stood to the bow of the ship during that Galilean storm and uttered, "Peace, be still!" The Greek translates, "Be muzzled!" The Living Bible adds, "Quiet down!" but the margin says quite expressly, "Shut up!"

We "wrestle not against flesh and blood" so I wouldn't advise dealing with most issues like that. It is the spiritual world that needs to know who is in charge. Daniel entered the lions' den with authority like a ringleader in a circus act. The law of God asserts the same authority when it says it was written "that every mouth may be stopped" (Romans 3:19). "A fool utters all his mind: but a wise man keeps it in till afterward" (Proverbs 29:11). The first mouth needing stopped is our own. It is from the platform of self-control that we are awarded divine control. Ezekiel learned, "When I speak with thee, I will open your mouth, and you shall say...Thus saith the Lord" (Ezekiel 3:27). Until God opens our mouths they need to stay shut, voluntarily, prayerfully, obediently, humbly. "I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me" (Psalm 39:1). We can never bridle the enemy while full of unbridled words, angers and lusts of our own. But we do have a grand promise at the close of the Book. When Jesus returns in full glory He will cast the enemy "into the bottomless pit, and shut him up..." (Revelation 20:3) Did you read that, "Shut him up"? Daniel saw it, we are seeing it, and will yet see it. The gag order is out! Yet a little while and the accusing tongue will be heard no more.
