to esteem them very highly in love..." (1 Thessalonians 5:13)
We will discuss self-esteem in a minute, but
this verse tells us to esteem others and to esteem them highly. Esteem is a
shorter version of our word estimate. Esteem is estimation, the value you place
on something or someone. Paul added, "...let each esteem other better than
themselves" (Philippians 2:3). The Bible speaks of others-esteem more
than self-esteem. The Christian call is to enervate, encourage, energize,
edify, endue and endow others more than ourselves. Knowing our position in
Christ gives us unlimited esteem; that shouldn't be an issue.
But it is with many. It could be because you
don't know who you are. You are made just a little inferior to Elohim
and have been crowned with glory and honor (Psalm 8:5). You are made in
the likeness and image of God; that means, divine "stuff". He threw the mold
away after He constructed you, not because the mold was flawed but because it
was grandly unique. Next, low esteem could be because you don't know Whose
you are. Paul said, "Ye are bought with price". A price I guess! - the
blood of Jesus. Did you know that had you been the only sinner Jesus still
would have personally died for you? Paul said, "...he loved me and gave himself
for me" (Galatians 2:20). Me!
And it could be that your esteem issue is that you
don't know what the Bible says about you. "Greater is he that is in you,
than he that is in the world". "I can do all things through Christ who
strengthens me". I could quote a thousand verses if this devotion had room.
Suffice to say that the New Testament is not condemning but is inspiring. "The
word of God is quick and powerful..." (Hebrews 4:12) The Greek word there is energeo;
the Word contains energy and is energizing. It will electrify your bulb,
light your fuse and warm your blood.
Full esteem ahead! That ought to be our
cry when our feet first hit the floor in the morning. I can't always say, "Full
steam ahead" because I tire at times. But full esteem works whether you have
full steam or not. It helps if parents, school teachers, coaches and other life
mentors have encouraged healthy esteem in our younger years. But even if that
has been lacking the Bible declares that you are "more than a conqueror through
him that loved you". Christ will never leave nor forsake you. You have back-up
every inch of the way. And the power of the Holy Spirit can and will make up
for every personal deficiency you have. But you have to start where you are.
Did you notice that at take-off the pilot doesn't "ease" into his ascent but shoves
the lever down and goes for broke? His intention is to fly, not creep. We have
to take on life with the same vigor. You have the want to. Philippians 4:13
says you have the can-do. Angels stand guard at the tips of both wings. Faith
has as much thrust as the engines of a 747. The only limits you have are those
imposed by fear. Your body, soul and spirit, the faculties God has equipped you
with, resemble that 747 a whole lot more than a fickle paper airplane. Your job
is to trust that it will accomplish that for which it was designed...flight. Now,
pull the lever. Full esteem ahead!
