THE INNER DOCTOR

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23)

Human anatomy is designed to heal itself. The immune system defends. Blood and nerves regenerate. An army of white blood cells takes infection captive. Fresh oxygen restores the original breath of life to every cell when we inhale. I believe in healing and lay hands on the sick in almost every service, but the purest healing is not from without but within. Man is spirit, soul and body - pneuma, psyche and soma. "Psychosomatic" symptoms then occur, mind over body. If a person is paralyzed in his head it is quite possible that his feet won't move. But just the opposite, "...a merry heart doeth good like a medicine" (Proverbs 17:22). We can "think" our way to wealth so why not also think our way to health?

I presume there is not a higher word called "pneumasomatic", spirit over body. Don't worry, I'm not wandering into Scientology. The spirit, the inner doctor, can affect tremendous therapy on the outer man. Paul prayed to be "strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man" (Ephesians 3:14). David urged, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and that is within me". You have a "within", a personality deeper than conscious thought. The "spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly" (Proverbs 20:27). That inside intelligence knows what is going on with every tissue, organ and system. And it feeds life through the furthest appendages. "Out of it", says our text, "are the issues of life". Life flows from the spirit.

Again Solomon wrote, "The spirit of a man will sustain [him in] infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?" (Proverbs 18:14) If there is peace inside the chemistry will be balanced. But with a "wounded spirit" comes spiritual toxicity, fear, stress, depression, resentment, etc. These psycho-spiritual forces take their toll, like viruses, like poisons. They overdose the blood stream and write their signatures in any number of negative pathologies. But on the flipside, "the joy of the Lord is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10).

Disciplines are needed. We are to "keep" our hearts with all diligence. That requires that we "let the peace of God rule" in our hearts (Colossians 3:15). The Greek word means "umpire". We are to let God's peace be the umpire calling a strikeout to every subversive thought that vies for consideration. Then there was a second "let" - "let the word of Christ dwell in you richly..." (Colossians 3:16) Feasting on God's word is manna for the spirit. "Man shall not live by bread alone". Your spirit needs rich nourishment for peak performance. Laugh from the heart...laugh for the heart. It will help the arteries stay clear. Plus, the phone lines need to stay clear. Never hold a grudge; always forgive. For to let go of resentment relieves a very heavy load. I mean, since vengeance is God's business it sure is a heavy load trying to do His work for Him. It has been noted that forgiveness is setting a prisoner free and then finding that the prisoner was you. When a snake latched on to Paul's arm, he just "shook it off" (Acts 28:5). If we are sure and victorious, deep inside, there will be nothing to fear. Diabetes, timidity, loneliness, guilt, cancer...halitosis, I don't care; shake it off! If you have been born-again, the Holy Spirit resides deep in your human spirit and He has made your body His temple. And, of course, He wants that temple strong and sound.
