POWER OF SEVEN
in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks one like the Son of man..."
I love the study of biblical numerics. One
whole book is called Numbers. Every Hebrew letter has numeric value. Don't get
that mixed up with Numerology which is a whole other can of worms, delving into
occultic mystery. No believer should cross that line. But God is the Master
Mathematician and does place special significance, at times, on symbolic
arithmetic. We are only a weekend away from the open of 2007, and seven is
good! Seven is God's designate number. It is indivisible, perfect, complete.
There are seven days in a week, seven notes in a musical scale, seven colors in
a rainbow, seven continents on the earth. Birth comes in multiples of seven,
280 days of pregnancy in human birth, forty seven-day weeks. Every seventh day
human physiology goes into rest mode. Everything slows down. Scientists cannot
explain it but Sabbath is encoded in the human genome.
The number seven is interspersed throughout the
redemptive process. Jesus made seven cries from the cross. He bled from seven
different wounds. Blood was sprinkled seven times on the Mercy Seat, as well,
seven sprinklings for the leper's cleansing (Lev 14:7). There were seven pieces
of furniture in the Tabernacle. Revelation is a book of sevens, seven
candlesticks and seven stars, emblems of the completed church, seven lamps of
fire around the throne, symbolic of the seven-fold work of the Holy Spirit.
Then there are the judgments, seven seals, seven trumpets, seven vials of
wrath, etc. The three Hebrews were cast into a fire heated "seven times hotter
than" ever before. That pictures testing in all points. The Tribulation Period
lasts seven years, a complete cleansing of this planet.
Every seventh year the Israelites let their
land rest (Lev 25:4). It was a sabbatical year, slaves were freed, debts were
cancelled. Think of 2007 in these terms, a perfect year, complete restoration,
depleted soil finding rest. Know that Christ's offer of salvation is complete.
Nothing needs added, "It is finished!" The golden menorah had seven branches
and seven lamps and its counterpart in Revelation pictures seven candlesticks.
This is a year for bright light, shining witness, greater understanding. And
Christ walks in the midst of those candles. Be encouraged that He will be there
for you. If we have been commanded to forgive until "seventy times seven" then
it must mean that God will increase human capacities. Hannah rejoiced that she
that was "barren has born seven" (1 Sam 2:5). Perhaps this is your year for heptad,
for enjoying full measure. The number "two-thousand" rounds up the
dispensation of grace. That would take a whole additional study (Josh 3:4), but
add seven to two-thousand and the numerical value becomes very pleasing. I'm
not in the realm of omens here. There is nothing superstitious about dates,
even Friday the thirteenths. This devotion is an "amen", not an "omen". I just
want you to relish the potential, the opportunities, that this year brings and
know that it was designed especially for you. So put some heaven in 2007. The
God of sevens will go before you.
