BACKFIRE

"...howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing" (Nehemiah 13:2)

Paul wrote that had the princes of the earth known what Calvary would accomplish, that is the unseen hierarchical fallen spirits, "they would not have crucified the Lord of glory" (1 Corinthians 2:8). Their plan backfired. Thinking they were crushing the "seed of the woman", they crushed their serpent-master's head instead (See Genesis 3:15). They thought He cried, "I'm finished!" when in fact He cried, "It is finished!" By nailing Jesus circumstances did a one-eighty nailing themselves. So many of the devil's plots backfire. He stirred Joseph's brothers to sell him into Egyptian slavery but by the time it was all over Joseph was vice-president to Pharaoh and became his brothers' savior in famine. Listen to Joseph's own account in a paraphrase, "You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good" (Genesis 50:20). That is Romans 8:28 in a nutshell.

Haman's wicked plot backfired. He erected the gallows to hang Mordecai on but God turned the plan on its head and when all was said and done Mordecai was riding through town on the king's mule while Haman swung by his neck from a rope. A. W. Tozer penned, "Every gallows built to destroy good men will hang the builder at last". So it has always been. Goliath was slain with his own sword. Persecution ends up spreading church growth instead of curtailing it. The blood of martyrs only waters and fertilizes the seed of revival. Make the Hebrews put out more brick and the added workload builds enough spiritual sinew to overthrow the whole regime. God has the last laugh. He makes all things work together for good to them that love Him.

How oft Satan has wished he would have left well enough alone. Had he simply left the aging Apostle John alone pastoring his rustic church in Ephesus the book of Revelation never would have been written. But he had to banish him out to that bald Isle of Patmos where John's prayers opened vistas no eye had before seen. That is the way it works, the church prospers under pressure, pines under prosperity. "The more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew..." (Exodus 1:12) Paul said that "the things which happened to me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel" (Philippians 1:12). The fire only purifies the gold ore, it can never disintegrate it. The sandy irritation perfects the pearl. The rocks on the road only serve to toughen tender youth's feet. I could walk barefoot for miles as a boy. Our text verse says that when Balaam came out, hired to curse Israel, that "God turned the curse into a blessing". Balaam tried to devise an incantation against Israel but the words popped out as blessings instead of curses. God can freeze a heathen soothsayer's tongue and make him speak to your favor. The Moabite king hired Balaam to curse but it backfired. There is a boomerang effect. The chisel and hammer used intending to crush the stone end up being the very tools God uses to cut the diamond. Don't fear the attack. God has a way of making it echo to His glory and to your betterment.
