HUMAN BECOMINGS

"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God..." (John 1:12)

Marriage therapist Ellen Kreidman teaches that we are not as much human beings as we are human becomings. None among us have arrived yet. All are in the becoming stage. Paul preached, "In him we live, and move, and have our being", so yes, we have being, but it saves a lot of guilt and heartache if we accept that we are not yet finished products. Even Jesus developed. He "increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man" (Luke 2:52). Through resurrection "the stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner" (Psalm 118:22). Notice, the stone is "become". He "became poor, that you through his poverty might be rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9). He became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. We are becomers, sometimes late bloomers, but steadily being transformed by the renewing of our minds. If we are not there yet, wherever there is, at least we are becoming.

"A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the Lord will hasten it in his time" (Isaiah 60:22). Growth comes through his chastening and hastening. Human beings are hatched out in nine months; human becomings take years and years. People ask, "When did you become a Christian?" or "When did you become a preacher?" Don't know, I'm still becoming. He gave us power to "become sons of God". Each day we grow into a pattern, "conformed to the image of his Son" (Romans 8:29). You've heard of lifetime achievement awards? That's what we get at the Judgment Seat, lifetime achievement, not weekly. Because this week I might fail, then again next week I might set records for myself. Balance out the two and you have a human becoming.

To the disciples Jesus bade, "Come after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men" (Mark 1:17). The becoming requires the following. Fellowship is good, follow-ship is better. Follow the leading of the Lord for your life and you will become. You may become an astronaut, a president, a great pastor or the world's greatest Mom, but become you will. "Who against hope", Abraham "believed in hope", and through his faith was "become the father of many nations" (Romans 4:18). The Hebrew people are still birthing seed to Father Abraham so the becoming stage still isn't finished now 3,500 years later. Through legacy he is still becoming. When Paul said "old things are passed away, and all things are become new" he was speaking in the present tense. I can look in the mirror and testify that all things became new but that is not how faith operates. All things are "become new". It is an ongoing, hourly, daily, actually moment by moment process, being "changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18). The transition or Kingdom transfer is gradual, "The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord..." (Revelation 11:15) Thy kingdom come has become. It is here, now, among us, within us, and is becoming stronger every day. Cheer up. If you're not all you wish to be yet, you certainly are on the right track or at least can be. Just see yourself as becoming...a human becoming.
