DIRTY BIRD

"...some seeds fell by the wayside, and the fowls came and devoured them up" (Matthew 13:4)

The devil is a dirty bird. Not every bird is bad, Lady Bird Johnson, Big Bird, Celtic hoopster Larry Bird and Alcatraz's birdman, to name a few, were all good folks. But there are birds of a different feather. Remember Alfred Hitchcock's hair-raiser, Birds? Satan is the "prince of the power of the air". His flock operates in the realm of "spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 2:2, 6:14). Our battle is against "every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God". There is a reason God gave Adam dominion over "the fowl of the air" (Genesis 1:28). It was because he was positioned above them. Life has its share of fowls and fouls. Babylon is the "hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird" (Revelation 18:2). Yea, Babylon is for the birds, so is the spirit of Babylon so prevalent today.

Dirty birds make a mess of things, the car, the yard, the sidewalks, public statues. Pigeons have a beauty when they flock but they do leave a deposit. Comedienne Erma Bombeck said, "Sometimes you're the pigeon, sometimes you're the statue". You get my drift. Not every bird is as genteel as an eagle. Jesus spoke of scavengers, "When any one hears the word of the kingdom, and understands it not, then comes the wicked one, and catches away that which was sown in the heart..." (Matthew 13:19) That is the wayside hearer. Such Word-thieves have to be resisted. Abraham swung a club, perhaps threw rocks or just backhanded birds as they swooped down to steal away his sacrifice. "And when the fowls came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away" (Genesis 15:11). Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Spurgeon or Wesley (one of those guys) taught that it is impossible to keep the fowls from circling overhead, but we can sure keep them from making a nest in our hair. Understanding that we have been raised with Christ and made to sit together in heavenly places, assures that we are positioned even higher than the highest climbing bird. "There is a path which no fowl knows, and which the vulture's eye has not seen..." (Job 28:7) The devil, that dirty bird, is a vulture. That is, he feeds on dead things. He spreads contagion, bird flu. The Spirit-life is eagle-life. They that wait upon the Lord "shall mount up with wings as eagles". It is the wind and the wingspan that enables high flyers to get above the clouds of doubt and flocks of fear. The wind is the inrush of the Holy Spirit. The wingspan is our growth through the Word and the span to which our faith has been stretched. Know that the greater One lives inside you. Hordes of spiritual entities that flock against you will flap their wings and scurry in fear like a backyard full of scattering starlings, the moment you utter the name Jesus. Stand in your authority. The victory is won.
