YOU ONE OF THE "ARE LED"?
as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God" (Romans
Notice it does not say that those that were
led or will be led are the sons of God, but those that are led.
Not that our status as sons and daughters of God is up for grabs every time we
turn around, but the Father/son relationship is clearest and surest when we are
walking, present tense, in His will and way. The Greek verb for "led" is translated
most times as "bring" or "brought". It means to be carried along by like a
haltered animal being led to its destination. The thought is accompaniment,
walking close by or behind as an attendant.
This guidance is "by" the Spirit of God. "By"
means origination as to say that Hamlet was "by" Shakespeare. The Spirit
authorizes each move. It may mean direction, "via", that to get home you have
to go "by" Madison Street because Morris Street is temporarily closed. David
wrote that "the steps of a good man are directed by the Lord" (Psalm 37:23).
The preposition also speaks of power, as freedom is gained "by" struggle, a
paycheck is earned "by" the sweat of one's brow, or that the kingdom
of God is taken "by force". To be led "by" the Spirit of God then implies that
He starts the course, charts the course and imparts force for the course. "Not
by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord" (Zechariah 4:6).
As important as is the word "by" so is the word
"are", which is "a second person singular and plural and first and third person
plural present indicative of the word be". Said what? Forget the English
lesson, it just simply means that moment by moment, day in and day out, God's
people have access to divine guidance and are the "are led" company. The "are
led" don't have to draw straws or flip coins because they have a home office
they can call up for directions. Spiritual leadership is what we had before GPS
navigation systems were added to luxury cars. We would pray, God would respond.
Jesus said the Comforter "will guide you into all truth..." (John 16:13) His word
to us is like a flashlight on a dark path (Psalm 119:105).
The "are led" crowd lives on fresh manna every
day. The Bible is never stale or historical, always alive and current. You
shall hear "a word behind you" (not "words" plural, but a "word" singular...He
doesn't clue us in on every detail), "saying, this is the way, walk ye in it"
(Isaiah 30:21). He doesn't normally map things out fifty miles ahead or even
fifty minutes ahead. This "is" the way, walk in it. The guidance is one day at
a time, often one step at a time, but the guidance is always accurate. Pastor
Jerry Haynes tells his young preachers, "Be led of the Holy Ghost and you'll
never be led wrong". Someone defends, "But I have the Bible to lead me". True,
but it must be the Holy Spirit that inspires that Bible otherwise you're only
following rules and generic statements. Let me explain. Jesus declared, "Man
shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth
of God" (Matthew 4:4). The old version says "proceedeth". It is a proceeding
word. God's revelation is not archaic. It is not the ink of an old book that
leads us believers, it is the breath of a living Book that does so. We "are led";
fed by the Word of the Lord then led by the Lord of the Word. We live "by" that
proceeding word and there is that little preposition again. It leads the way.
Are you one of the "are led"? Listen, hear, follow, and you can be one too.
