LEADERS WEAR A LOT OF HATS

"...I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some" (1 Corinthians 9:22)

Leaders, don't think you can get by with just sitting in your executive chair issuing decrees ex cathedra. Nothing evolves or revolves until the leader involves. One day it's a suit and tie, the next day work gloves and a shovel. You have to wear a lot of different hats. First, you must be a FUTURIST. Leaders live out in the future. They know the way, go the way and show the way. Montagne said, "No wind favors him who has no destined port". The futurist has a one-month plan, one-year plan, five, ten and twenty year plans. The man with the plan is the man that can.

He also is a SPECIALIST. Edison said, "Other men think of many things all day long; I think of one thing all day long". Paul agreed, "This one thing I do". Good leaders stay in their fields of expertise. You can hire other men's brains where you are deficient. Stay in your groove. The artist needs to paint, not try out for the soccer team. Anyone can be a specialist. There is enough information available now by book, CD, library and college tutorial to become an expert at any chosen field if you'll only invest the time needed.

Next, he or she is an ACTIVIST. The fourth book of the New Testament is the Book of Acts, not suggestions, hopes, wishes or dreams of maybe someday. General Grant claimed, "I am a verb". Activists don't just wade near the bank shivering. They dive in and get it over with. Procrastination is the poorest nation on earth. Procrastination aborts predestination. To be active means to be proactive. Activists do activities. They are activated. That requires rolled up sleeves; that requires work.

A good leader is an OPTIMIST. Optimists opt for the optimum in every opportunity. An optimist sees the donut, a pessimist sees the hole. It is really just another word for faith. Faith has the ability to see the good that comes through at the end. It comes from the same root as optic or optometry. Optimism has to do with sound sight, a healthy self-image and assurance in God's favor. Someone said, "You can't be optimistic with a misty optic!" So get an optic check-up.

Add one more hat today and we will continue this mini-message tomorrow; a leader must be an ANALYST. He has the keen ability to size up a situation in an instant. David did that with Goliath. He thought, the bigger they stand the harder they fall. He thought, this giant is so big I can't miss him. He thought, if I can whip Goliath then all the others will be a cinch. Watch the analyst at work. A mechanic can diagnose by just the purr of the motor. A chef can analyze the situation by sense of taste. An interior decorator can walk into a living room and know exactly what is needed and where. Friend, my power wish for you today is for the leader to rise up within you. You have all kinds of gifts. God put them in you from the start. They may need stirring though. You do that by allowing yourself to dream again. Where do you see yourself in five years? What is the one thing that if you could do it would make you the happiest? Do you have a passion; is there some injustice that makes your skin crawl or some work of compassion that makes your heart leap? Then go for it. Like I mentioned about the activist, dive in and get 'er done!
