I know God has a plan for my life and for yours. And I know that it is good because His Word says so – final answer! Now, how do we get to that future? Which road do we take? What obstacles will we face? What if, what if, what if….we have so many questions, don’t we?
I like to look at my life’s journey as a road trip. It helps me to understand when I’ve taken a wrong turn, missed an exit or went too fast. When I’ve gone down bumpy roads in my life it taught me to be a better driver, to watch for those potholes and to keep my eyes on the road. And of course, no texting when driving. Distractions of any kind can cause accidents, whether it’s on the road or in our lives. I purchased a 4-wheel drive truck because I seem to spend a lot of time on rough roads. Bumpy, winding roads, mountain climbing, mud hole bogging and highways to nowhere with a few skid marks. But, looking back I can see that as I traveled those roads I learned a lot about life and matured in many ways. I found those potholes had a purpose. They prepared me for the future. You have to be watchful because hitting a pot hole could throw you off balance. I’ve had to regain my balance on several occasions. My truck also had a purpose; it equipped me to handle the journey. We must equip ourselves through prayer and reading the Word to reach our destination in life. We also have to stay tuned to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
The easiest journey – smooth highways with no potholes and no traffic lights, just exit ramps. Oh yes, these are the best trips. Just pack your snacks, grab your sunglasses and head for that next destination. But if we are not careful, we can miss our exit ramp or God’s plan for us. Be watchful on straight, smooth highways when everything is going well. We must always be alert to where God is leading us. Be ready to exit, get in the right lane and when you hear the prompting of the Holy Spirit, go for it. Life is an adventure with God!
Let’s talk about traffic lights. Red lights can be annoying can’t they? But they too have their purpose. Sometimes we must sit and allow others to pass through that intersection. But when that light turns green, it’s our turn! Yes, sometimes we must wait, but when that light turns green don’t hesitate! If you don’t go, you could get in an accident, just like if you don’t stop when it’s red. Stay on the move, watch for the signs and don’t be afraid to keep moving forward on life’s road trip.
What about the yellow lights – much controversy here. Do you proceed with caution or do you stop as if it were red? Hmmm, you will find me proceeding with caution. I’m not one to sit still! I am on a mission, to follow God and His plan for my life. No, you won’t miss God if you stop for that yellow light, but you may arrive late. I have always been one to arrive early and sometimes way too early. Yes, I drive the speed limit, only because I don’t want to pay a fine, but I’m not afraid to drive fast. And, then there are times that we have to use our cruise control so we don’t get ahead of God.
If you will listen to the Holy Spirit and let him direct your steps (or driving), you will arrive at your destination having gained much Godly wisdom and matured through the process. He only has good things in store for us. But we must follow His plan, even if we don’t know where the rough roads are taking us. Life is not always a smooth highway and that’s ok!
Once upon a time, I took a trip and at the last minute found out that I would be making that trip alone. Yes, I hesitated, yes I thought about waiting until another time and yes I had to seek God – a lot! His answer was short, “Go and I will be with you”. I had no idea if I would find another bumpy road with potholes, or miss an exit and I had to make this trip alone. But, I know to follow Him when He speaks! So, trusting God I packed for the trip and headed out. The highway was good, no potholes, no red lights and no skid marks. You never know what you will find when you travel with God but I can guarantee you this: He has plans to prosper you and not harm you and yes, I will follow Him anywhere without limitation! And who knows, along the way you just might find your purpose. And with that, comes a big smile, much peace and renewed hope.
Be willing to risk the bumpy roads, wrong turns, potholes and red lights to get to your destination with God. Stay in the Word, continue in prayer and walk it out!
Life is an adventure when you cling close to Him. Grab your tools, listed below, and enjoy the journey my friends!
TOOLS FOR YOUR ROAD TRIP
Ephesians 6:11-18 King James Version (KJV)
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,”
declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to
give you hope and a future.”
James 1: 2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
